Binge Drinking in Texas

GETTING DRUNK, SMASHED, BUZZED, PLASTERED, TRASHED, LOOPY, OUT-OF-IT, SNOOKERED, OR HIGH

BINGE DRINKING means the heavy consumption of alcohol over a short period of time.

The generally accepted definition is the consumption of five or more drinks in a row by men, or four or more drinks in a row by women, in about two hours. Heavy binge drinking includes three or more such instances in two weeks.

Binge drinking often comes under the guise of fun and games. But what's fun about throwing your guts up?

There comes a point when falling over, getting into fights and passing out loses its appeal.

Getting so wrecked you can barely walk, never mind walk straight, means you're putting yourself at risk for more than a sore head the next day. Binge drinking is dangerous to the you and to people around you. Especially the little ones...read the commentary below.....

Alcohol is one of the worst drugs for brining out bad behaviors that hurt you and others.

HOW CAN YOU SPOT BINGE DRINKING:

  • Someone initiates drinking to get drunk and lose control
  • They drink quickly and in large amounts
  • They are prone to do stupid and harmful activities like driving under the influence, starting fights, and taking unnecessary risks of any kind.

The most serious immediate consequence of binge drinking in Texas is alcohol poisoning—a severe and potentially deadly reaction to an alcohol overdose. When you consume excessive amounts of alcohol, the brain is deprived of oxygen and the struggle to deal with an overdose of alcohol and lack of oxygen will eventually cause the brain to shut down the voluntary functions that regulate breathing and heart rate.

Alcohol poisoning is not to be taken lightly. It can cause death. If a person is known to have consumed large quantities of alcohol in a short period of time, symptoms of alcohol poisoning to watch for include; vomiting; unconsciousness; cold, clammy, pale, or bluish skin, and slow or irregular breathing (less than eight breaths a minute or 10 or more seconds between breaths). If you are with someone who experiences these symptoms, do not leave them alone, keep this person awake and CALL 911.

Other short-term effects of binge drinking include:

  • Loss of consciousness (a sign of alcohol poisoning)
  • Hangover—headache, intense thirst, nausea, vomiting, extreme sensitivity to light and noise, blurry vision, shakiness, and exhaustion
  • Falling or running into things, causing injury or death
  • Inability to make good decisions
  • Unplanned or unsafe sexual activity
  • Increased risk of sexual assault
  • Getting into trouble with authorities
  • Damaging property
  • Behaving aggressively and getting into fights
  • Respiratory arrest
  • Choking to death on vomit
  • Sudden death from stroke
  • Increased risk of drowning
  • Loss of reasoning ability, movement control, and reaction speed—all of which make you deadly behind the wheel of a car Even ten hours after you sober up, your reasoning ability, movement control, and reaction speed are still limited.

These alcohol facts show the devastating problem alcohol causes in Texas, but it doesn't communicate the numbers of people that choose alcohol over their family, spend the rent at the bar and come home with more lies and justifications that tear at the hearts of one's love, nor does it communicate the pain children in Texas alcoholic families feel when they are promised a "date" with dad at the baseball game, but he doesn't show up or is in bed trying to recover from the bender last night, or the terror in the hearts of children who witness this unreal person screaming and physically abusing their mother, or sometimes father.

It is very difficult for children to think with this Dr. Jeckel and Mr. Hyde idea of their parent(s). Children are learning to survive through your examples, give them the best of lessons so that they can live without the fear that their stable relationships can explode and leaving them wondering "what do I do now?"
